Patricia Overberg Joins SAFE Speakers Bureau

Ms. Overberg began working with victims in the early 1960's through a
program of the Providence, RI School System. She found that many of
the children who had emotional, academic and acting out problems came
from violent homes, and she worked primarily with their mothers.
During that time, Ms. Overberg went back to school and got her
bachelors degree. From there she went to Miami, attended Barry
University and worked with the elderly, many of whom were being
battered by their children. After graduating with an MSW, she drove
to California with the goal of living and working in different parts
of the state, which she says she has ?pretty well accomplished.?
After working with the mentally ill at a YWCA, she then spent the
remainder of her career working with family violence, sexual assault,
rape and stalking victims. From 1984 to presently, she has had
positions as the CEO of various organizations, including the Valley
Oasis in Lancaster where she opened the first and only shelter for
battered men in the country. She was working with an agency in
Salinas which was first called the Women's Crisis Center and is now
known as the Central Coast Crisis Center and advertises that it
serves all ages, genders and families in need. She currently works
with the Men's Center in San Diego to help maintain services to men
throughout San Diego and Orange Counties.

SAFE Needs Your Help

July, 2008

Dear SAFE supporter:

Current economic conditions have caused many of our dedicated
supporters to curtail the customary and generous support SAFE relies
on. As a result SAFE faces a serious revenue shortfall. And yet,
SAFE?s important mission must continue. Victims of domestic violence
can?t wait. SAFE needs your help!

Stop Abuse for Everyone is a 501(c)3 non-profit agency committed to
assisting those suffering domestic abuse, i.e., straight men, GLBT
victims, teens, and the elderly. As you know, SAFE does not
discriminate, upholding our motto that no victim is left behind
because of gender, age, religion, race or ethnicity. Selected as one
of the 50 most promising strategy programs
(http://mcgruff.stores.yahoo.net/50strattopre.html) in the nation to
prevent domestic violence by the National Crime Prevention Council.

Your generous donation, whatever the amount, supports our
award-winning website, our nationally distributed brochures, SAFE
support groups and perpetuates the work of SAFE International. We are
also developing a nationally based support program with an innovative
approach that we believe has the potential to reach many individuals
without access to services where they currently live. Through the
support of donors like you, direct services are made available
through SAFE chapters in New Hampshire, Illinois and Washington, and
allows SAFE the financial means to develop more chapters throughout
the U.S and the world.

Please help SAFE continue our mission to stop abuse for everyone.
Donations may be made online at our website
(http://www.safe4all.org/donate/) or through the mail at the address
above.

On behalf of all the victims and survivors of domestic abuse whose
lives improve because of your commitment to them, we thank you!

Sincerely,

SAFE International Board
Jade Rubick, President
Lee Newman, Executive Director
Ira Steitfeld
Sheila Smith
Jack Turteltaub
Reid Vanderburgh

P.S. Please take a moment now to help make a difference.

Dr. Linda G Mills , a member of SAFE's Speaker's Bureau releases her new book "Violent Partners"!

A radical new take on the crisis of intimate abuse, Violent Partners
argues that as a culture we misunderstand the root causes and basic
effects of abuse, and until that changes there is no hope of fixing
the problem. Dr. Linda Mills challenges assumptions, tears down
myths, and offer solutions, all the while telling riveting stories of
couples who have conquered violence in their relationships.

In Violent Partners, she describes several programs that hold
promise for addressing intimate abuse, one of which is SAFE, Stop
Abuse For Everyone!

Visit the book's website for more information.

Congratulations Linda on your groundbreaking work!
We are proud to have you as one of our brilliant Speakers.

Reid Vanderburgh is a licensed Marriage and Family therapist with a
private practice in Portland, OR. His specialization and focus is
helping people cope with major life transformative events: Loss and
grief, domestic violence, shifting sexual orientation, and emergence
of gender identity issues. He brings a unique prospective as someone
who transitioned from female to male in the mid 1990's. He is the
author of Transition and Beyond: Observations on Gender Identity.

In addition to his work as a therapist, Reid has extensive experience
providing workshops, classes and presentations on transgender issues,
within a variety of settings. He became interested in domestic
violence work first professionally, desiring to help agencies begin
the process of being more holistic in their approach to the issue. In
this way, they would better serve the transgender survivors. On a
personal level, his interest deepened when a close friend disclosed
that she was a long time survivor, making him realize how insidious
deep seated shame can be. Reid is a member of WPATH(World
Professional Association for Transgender Health)and the American
Association of Family Therapists. He was a former Board Member of
Basic Rights Oregon and recently became an International Board Member
of SAFE.

Specialized Topics:

    * Domestic Violence in the Transgender Community
    * Transgender Inclusion in Service Provision

SAFE seeks fairness for boys and girls, men and women!

This podcast is extremely important!
This show is in part about the "Coaching Boys Not To Abuse" program
and "curriculum" (part 1) but there is also some additional insight
into the use of the DV system to abuse innocent people.(part 2) and
this interview is done by a woman. She also speaks openly about the
damage that families have suffered due to the bias that has been
encouraged by the Domestic Violence "industry".
Please listen to the show by going to
http://www.wgy.com/cc-common/podcast/single_podcast.html?podcast=al_roney.xml
and scrolling down to "Domestic Violence Campaign (pts.1 & 2)"

SAFE-NH has sent several letters to this Coach Your Boys Campaign
since it's launch a couple of years ago,
http://endabuse.org/programs/display.php3?DocID=9916 telling them
that this is a discriminatory program.
We suggested to them that they should consider supporting campaigns
that teach both boys and girls not to be abusive to anyone and to
respect EVERYONE!. However, they have never bothered to respond.
We also have always said that this is curriculum is unfair and
harmful to boys!

National Partners of this Campaign:
http://endabuse.org/programs/display.php3?DocID=9914

Local Partners:
http://endabuse.org/programs/display.php3?DocID=100210

Please listen to this interview and let me know your thoughts...this
is much the same as we have been expressing at SAFE-NH for over 5
years!

Maybe it's time to contact the list of Corporations that are listed
as "Partners" in this campaign and suggest that they financially
support programs that are making an "honest" effort to "Stop Abuse
For Everyone", rather than biased organizations that erode families
and our communities by discriminating against males of all ages!

Their "customers" are men and women, so both men and ethical women
should take a stand on this for their sons.
They must also take a stand for their daughters, or they will get the
message that their violent acts are excusable or worse yet ,the
misguided perception that their violence is a sign of female
empowerment.
When everyone regardless of gender is treated, supported and
respected equally we will see that there are ways to make our
families and our communities safer for everyone!

It's no longer acceptable for Domestic Violence to be the meal ticket
for programs that focus on getting the financial gravy train to stop
at their door at the expense of families and valid victims of abuse!
It IS time for funding to be given to organizations that are honestly
trying to protect people and heal our communities with non- biased
approaches!

We must hold abusive people accountable but we must also hold
organizations accountable for their abusive actions as well.
Organizations that are money-driven and willfully discriminate even
after they know the facts, need to suffer the consequences by losing
their funding to others who treat all people equally and with
dignity.

Let's join together and help new perspectives and approaches to reach
their tipping point so that families can thrive and once again become
a strong part of the fabric of our communities!
